I don't know if that is a common problem, it's just a bug that I personally encountered. And if you have a bug where you get stuck on an elevator, reload the last save and jump up and down right before you get to the bottom/top of the elevator to avoid getting stuck. I recommend saving often in case you encounter any sort of bug caused by the recent updates to the game. You can turn a retail disc version of the game into a Steam version: under the Games menu at the top of Steam you can do "Activate A Product on Steam" and put in the old retail CD key and it will then give you a steam version of the game that will automatically update. Rumour has it that Gunman Chronicles keys were also valid for some weird reason. Minor correction: both (Sierra) Half-Life and (Sierra) Blue Shift keys were redeemable. Some of the early games were published by Sierra and never worked on Steam. Opposing Force is the first official expansion for Half-Life, developed by Gearbox Software under the supervision of the original creator Valve. might be best to make sure they are installed in the default location of C:\Sierra\Half-Life (if I remember correctly after all these years). OPFOR and Blue Shift were not redeemable. I have an old copy of half life but when I redeem it on steam it says code already used but copy was never opened. Don't know why the patches wouldn't be able to detect where you installed the game. If you have the old retail version (and you've added it to your steam as a non-steam game or something), then steam won't be able to update it, you have to download patches.

If for some reason it hasn't updated, you could right click on the game in your library and do "delete local content", then click on it and install it again.
do you own the retail version or the steam version? If it is the steam veresion, then it should automatically be the latest version of the game.
